My exhibition at Untether Gallery will open on Sept 3 at 132 Little MAlop Street Geelong. My friend Silvana Benacchio will be opening the show as I can’t get to Victoria this year. The shoe features textile works both wearable and ornamental. HeartFELT is an exhibition which displays the potential and versatility of wool felt as an art form. Zela makes a conscious choice to use natural materials, principally wool, cotton and silk. She uses skills of the hand, rubbing the wool with soap to make felt, slow-stitching and trimming with embroidery thread. In this exhibition we can see large wall hangings, decorative pieces, wearables such as scarves and tunics, functional items including purses and bags, 3D sculptural works and small-scale detailed works of jewellery. From scenes of nature depicting actual places such as Tasmania’s Cradle Mountain and Lake Ct Claire, the exhibition also includes imaginative renderings.
Zela uses a combination of wet and dry felting techniques and elaborately embellishes many pieces with slow-stitch embroidery, 3-dimensional additions and beading. This exhibition appeals to the tactile senses as well as its visual aesthetic, inviting touch with a variety of smooth and textured surfaces. Felt is a wonderful material to wear for its warmth, lightness and luxurious feel and many of the garments are nuno-felted onto a silk or cotton backing which enhances their wearability.
