Weeds to Paper Day #1 March 13 2025
Day 1 covers identifying weeds with potential for paper-making and decorating. It promotes a sensitive perception of the local area and encourages each participant to re-imagine the vegetation in a perceptive way, and work towards exploring possibilities for art and self-expression. Each workshops is limited in number to12 participants. These need not be a continuous group.  Stage 1: 10 am Meet at collection area. Walking in the local area, identifying weeds suitable for papermaking and decorating and carefully selecting some botanical fragments. This is an exercise which heightens perceptiveness spatial awareness. Stage 2: Preparing the gathered material to be incorporated into the paper sheets. This requires cutting/chopping into small pieces, and cooking in an alkaline solution. This is a heating process and needs a safe space for cooking. While the plants are cooking, we will view some PowerPoints abut papermaking. Could we use a uni classroom? Morning Tea 11- 11.30am Stage 3: Soft paper sheets will be produced in the next stage of the workshop. I will have some prepared (cooked and rinsed) pulps ready for couching. Sheets will marked with makers name on cloth or on a paper tag. Inclusions will be introduced – possibilities and limitations Lunch 1pm – 1.30 pm BRING SOME LUNCH and your drink bottle Stage 4: The cooked fibres will be cooled and rinsed. Some finished artworks including framed examples, artist books, collages and greeting cards will be viewed and discussed. At this early stage we already need to be thinking about what people would like to make for the exhibition in November. I have funds to professionally frame 20 works so that will be one for each participant at least.  Finish: 2.30pm I will dry and press the sheets made in readiness for decorating them in a fortnight on March 27.
