I am excited to share that two of my works concerning the World Heritage listed island of K’gari have been acquired by the Fraser coast Regional Council for their permanent collection. Only Embers is a visceral response to the terrible Duling fires of 2020 on K’gari when a pall of black smoke enveloped Butchulla Country and one third of the island’s vegetation was destroyed. It utilises layers of paper pulp made from local plants, earths and charcoal and inks brewed from bark to evoke the layers of ash left after a hot fire.
Resurgence is a work also concerned with the fires, but reflects the first signs of regeneration. It consists of multiple layers of botanical papers, brewed inks, slow stitching and a cast low-relief sculptural form. These works are highly emotive compositions reflecting the artist’s intense concern for the welfare of K’gari..
