Spring in the subtropics! What artist could fail to be inspired by the riot of colour that surrounds us now?
Vast vistas of lilac jacaranda blossoms on the tree and lavender carpets underneath! Rich scarlet, magenta and cerise bougainvillea rioting from the fences! The bright green of the fresh grass encouraged by the gentle rain! Lush fronds of the palms! And, of course, along the coast, the deep blues and turquoises at the waters and the silky golden sand.
As an artist recently moved to Wide Bay I respond to the colours and the riotous energy of Spring here in the sub-tropics. When I am travelling I use watercolours and pencils to record my surroundings, but now I have a papermaking studio set up and can respond to my surroundings in a more material way. The Springtime Botanical Bouquets are recent works in which I’ve used local plants, (mostly weeds), inks made from indigo and berries and selected tonally rich elements assembled to create lively representations of the burgeoning energy of Spring amid the rich colours of our region. These works are my response to the seasonal changes around me. They are paper multi-layered paper assemblages, each one different yet united by colour, texture and composition.
